The Message of Francis of Assisi By H.F.B. Mackay

During these years Francis had to preached to anybody; the idea of preaching, still less of founding on Order, had never entered his head. He had simply followed a clue which led him by painful happenings and along a dark path into a closer union with God.

The path had brought the romantic adventurous boy into a humble life of simple, boring, manual tasks; but its complete lack of great enterprise, mattered nothing to him.
But all this time young Francis was our Lord’s apprentice, he was learning to live and suffer as our Lord lived and suffered, sharing the life of the leper, the poor and the helpless; and so all the while Francis was putting on Christ, his power, his sympathy, his love, and gradually he came to see all men and all things as the redeemer sees them.
